Learn Fiber Optics Yourself!
If you can't take time out to attend an onsite training course or just prefer to learn on your own, you will like our self-study fiber optics courses. The VDV Academy Self-Study Courses offer a self-paced format so you can customize the course to your own needs and learn on your own schedule.
The first part of this course is free go online to VDV Academy.com for the tutorial Lennie Lightwave's Guide To Fiber Optics.
When you're ready, you can purchase the Self-Study program which will provide you with a more detailed education in fiber optic installation.
The Basics section includes how fiber optics works, how it's used, installation procedures, components like connectors, splices and cable, and testing. The Installation section leads you through "hands-on" exercises, including fiber optic cable handling, splicing and termination, using the same programs taught by VDV Academy instructors.
You can purchase the course modules only and use your own equipment or we can also provide basic equipment and consumables for the course, customized for your needs.

Prerequisites: These courses assume you are already familiar with networking and cabling and have studied all the modules of Lennie Lightwave's online guide. If you are a novice, we suggest you take a complete training course.

If you want to get certified through the FOA CFOT program, you can order VDVSSF and VDVCFOT (below) together and save $100 - see the order form. This provides the fiber optic self-study program plus a study guide for the FOA CFOT exam and includes the exam.

VDV SSO: VDV Academy Understanding OTDRs

Classroom study on OTDR theory and practice including numerous sample OTDR traces to analyze. Includes OTDR simulation software that requires PC running Windows. Included in VDVSSF above.

VDVCFOT: VDV Academy FOA CFOT Preparation Course
This course prepares you for your Fiber Optic Association CFOT certification, which is highly regarded in the fiber optic industry. About 11,000 students have achieved the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) since 1996. Includes the FOA textbook, The Fiber Optic Technicians Manual, study guide and CFOT applications fee. Note: The FOA requires fiber optic training and/or experience to qualify for the certification. (Completing the companion VDV Academy Fiber Basics & Installation (VDVSSF) would qualify).
