Montezumas Castle

Montezuma Castle National Monument View from the visitor center.

As you want closer, you see how big it is (20 rooms on 5 levels) and how high it is above the valley floor.

Entry was by ladders. When it was first opened to visitors, they could climb ladders up to enter it themselves.

This cliff dwelling is remarkably well preserved.

This shows the inaccessibility of the dwelling except by ladders.

Look near the middle, for the rectangular "cave."

It's a doorway surrounded by stones, another dwelling in a cave.

Great gnarly old tree.

Looking down the cliff, you can see the river.

Having running water was the same requirement for Indian villages as was for settlers from Europe.

How the castle was built. The next 6 slides will show the construction sequence.
